Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences at Carnegie Mellon University is an free intensive, five-week summer residential program that emphasizes cooperative learning and hands-on laboratory research for PA high school juniors pursuing careers in science and mathematics. Applications open at the end of October and are due at the end of January.  Completed applications must be emailed per instructions on the Carnegie Mellon University – Pennsylvania Governor’s School for the Sciences webpage . Applications can be completed following the instructions available on the Apply to the Governor’s School for the Sciences webpage.

Amazon Future Engineers Scholarship – High school seniors may receive an AFE Scholarship of up to $40,000 toward a degree in computer science. (There were 8 AFE scholarship recipients from Pennsylvania in the class of 2024.)   Applications are due by January 15th, 2026.  Check back for next year.

Navy Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) –  Applications are open August 1st through November 1st to work at a NAVY lab summer 2026 (applicant portal).
SEAP places high school students in Department of Navy (DoN) laboratories where they take part in real Naval research for eight weeks during the summer.  SEAP gives academically talented sophomores, juniors, and seniors interested in STEM the opportunity to learn about Naval research and technology while receiving first-class mentoring by top scientists and engineers.

Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Scholars Program for upper-level high school students

Autonomy Technology Research Center (ATRC) Summer Program in Dayton, OH – This is a paid 14 week collaborative research  internship for high school seniors and college students to answer Air Force sensing and autonomy technologies, sensor processing and exploitation, object detection, tracking and recognition, navigation, geolocation, malware detection and defense issues.

Army Educational Outreach Program (AEOP) Apprenticeships for high school students.  Applications will be open December-February.
