The Challenges are on!

Four hundred thirty-four students from six states are expected to participate this spring in one or more of one hundred Sea, Air or Land Challenge teams.

In April, the first of the regional Sea Air and Land Challenge kicks off.  Millersville University, a new regional host for the South Central PA region, is the host.  Coordinated by Dr. Len Litowitz, Chairperson for the Department of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology, Challenge Day will be held on April 25th at their Student Memorial Center.

Two days later on April 27th, the Northern PA, Eastern PA and the Southwestern PA regions will each host their Challenge Days.  The first will be at Bradford Area High School, coordinated by educator Pete Eckstrom.  Eastern PA is co-coordinated by Berks County IU’s Jill Darlington and Schuylkill IU’s Katlin Kelly and will be held at Cabela’s of Hamburg.  The Southwestern PA region will be held at Seneca Valley High School in Harmony and is coordinated by educator, Joe Logsdon.

The week is completed on Friday, April 28th at Eastern Ohio’s Challenge Day.   This Challenge is coordinated by educator, Jeff Merrill, and will be hosted by Buckeye Local HS in Rayland. On May 10th, the Central PA Challenge Day will be held at Penn State University in Altoona.  This event is coordinated by Education and Training Specialist, Deb Flaig.

Southeastern VA will host Challenge Day on May 13th at Suffolk Public School’s Col. Fred Cherry MS.  This event is coordinated by Manager of Information Services, Chris Lafferty, and is open to both middle school and high school teams.

We thank our new sponsor within the Department of Defense, the Defense Threat Reduction Agency’s Interaction of Ionizing Radiation with Matter University Research Alliance (DTRA-IIRM-URA).  This year, they will be providing T-shirts to all participants, educators, judges, mentors and volunteers.

We also thank the many keynote speakers who have volunteered to talk with the students about technology and careers related to the Department of Defense. University locations will offer tours of their facilities.

We look forward to meeting the students and seeing the robotic systems that they have created to meet the Sea, Air and Land missions.  If you have any questions, please see the FAQ at https://seaairland.psu.edu/faq/ or contact the Sea Air and Land Group at seaairland@arl.psu.edu.
