The Pennsylvania State University is a major, public, state-related research university with campuses and facilities throughout Pennsylvania. Founded in 1855, the university has a stated threefold mission of teaching, research, and public service.
The Electro-Optics Center, part of the Pennsylvania State University Applied Research Laboratory (PSU-ARL), is focused on developing, manufacturing and transitioning technology to the Navy and to the Department of Defense (DoD) in partnership with its Alliance of industry and academic partners. Our staff is comprised primarily of former industry and DoD personnel who are dedicated to develop and build prototypes and field systems at reduced costs. Since inception, our programs have enabled the DoD to realize savings of over $5B to date. Key to our success is insuring the workforce for tomorrow. Our education and outreach programs are assisting the “pipeline” of new talent at all career levels and encouraging students to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
The Interaction of Ionizing Radiation with Matter University Research Alliance, collectively known as the IIRM-URA, collaboratively advances the understanding of radiation-material interactions. Comprised of 14 universities and 10 institutions, national laboratories, and industry partners, IIRM focuses on the research, development, and integration of technology to improve nuclear survivability and response. The IIRM-URA is funded by the Department of Defense’s Defense Threat Reduction Agency (DTRA).
